At Ecoembes, the price you pay for each commercial packaging item varies depending on the material of which it is made, its weight, and the business (the final holder of the waste) where its useful life ends.
There are 2 types of business (or final holders) depending on how they manage packaging waste:
- Businesses that carry out the comprehensive, private management of more than 80%* of the commercial packaging waste of which they are the final holders, without making use of the municipal channel.
- Businesses or final holders that do not reach that 80%* comprehensive management figure (that is, more than 20% ends up in the municipal channel), and those that directly convey all their waste to municipal bits, and other cases, which we can call “Other final holders.”
To calculate your contribution to the PRO you must know the distribution of the units of packaging that you put on the market, between the two types of businesses described. This will determine the final amount, as you will only pay for the items of commercial packaging that end up at “Other final holders” (Type-2 businesses).
For packaging items that end up being privately managed by Type-1 businesses, you will pay €0 into the PRO.
*In 2025, 80% applies; in other years the figure will be 85%
